Salon Spy: Drybar

IMG_3587A salon that specializes in beautification treatments named after cocktails? Sign me up!! I walked into the Drybar blowout boutique in West Hollywood, CA and I instantly wished I worked there. That’s how I know I really like a place.

The Drybar team must have thought I was all kinds of crazy when I rolled up in there – literally – with my luggage in hand (I stopped there first before hitting my hotel), but they were nothing more than accommodating. A super friendly receptionist took my suitcase to lock away for safe keeping during my service and exchanged it for a massive glass of bubbly champagne. A perfect trade!

The vibe was instantly bright and fun – with adorable décor to match. Shabby chic fixtures lined the walls in the shampoo room and a fun mix of funky furnishings occupied the rest of the salon (like my fav – a yellow chandelier constructed with blowdryers)!dryer

I was greeted soon after by my stylist, a super cool boho chick named Megan. We had a consultation based on the drybar signature looks – Straight Up, Manhattan, The Cosmo, The Mai Tai, Cosmo-Tai, Southern Comfort, Hot Toddy, and Up-Tini. They also have a styling option for the little ones called the Shirley Temple! So cute, right?! Anyway, I selected Southern Comfort, a fitting name for the full style (described as “big hair with lots of volume” in their menu).

She blew out my hair then set it using roller clips (which, trust me, is a lot of work especially with long hair like mine) based on my desired look (good call, Meg!). While she was setting my hair, we swapped stories about vacations, chatted about our favorite movies and she delighted me with tales of drybar’s regular celebrity clients like Rose McGowan (and other LA tales like how Owen Wilson helped her parallel park this one time). There is nothing more awkward than sitting in silence at a salon – and thankfully this was not the case here!

laI was smiling even through checkout when my bill came to $35. In the grand scheme of pampering, $35 is a steal, especially in LA. It’s a really good price if you’re getting blown out for a special event… especially considering the $80 and up (way up) it could cost you for an updo that you might opt for instead.

The blowdry bar concept is no stranger to larger markets like NY and LA, but it is just starting to flourish in other areas of the country. Blazing the trail, Drybar has scooped up locations in California, New York, Georgia, Arizona, Texas, and the Washington DC area. They stick to their motto of “no cuts, no color, just blowouts.” With this type of specialized salon, you have to be spot on with your services… and Drybar certainly is.

From the bright color scheme and personable “mascot” (Buttercup, a yellow blow dryer) to the cheeky language used in marketing materials – Drybar is totally refreshing, like the bubbles I enjoyed while waiting for my stylist.

My only gripe is that they don’t have a location in Florida. Get on that, Drybar!

Salon: Drybar; West Hollywood, CA

Service: Blowout (Southern Comfort)

Price: $35

Verdict: Worth it! My hair looked fab and I had a blast getting beautified.

Wear This/Drink That: Mad Men Edition

In honor of tonight’s season premiere of AMC’s Mad Men, Estee Lauder launched a simple, but beautiful limited edition batch of products inspired by the show. The period drama is one of my absolute favorite shows, not only because of the killer acting and brilliant writing (…and my massive crush on Jon Hamm), but also because the costuming and makeup design is spot on. I just love watching the changes in trends and years reflect in their faces. I also love watching the cocktails they shake up throughout the show.

Wear This: Estee Lauder Mad Men Collection

Estee Lauder captured the essence of the show perfectly with this collection, the second Mad Men inspired cosmetic line by the company, with a modern take on shades worn by sixties sirens. Even the packaging pays homage to the golden days, with classic Estee Lauder sixties-era replica cosmetic cases.madmenestee2 The coordinating Mad Men trio includes See Thru Blush in Light Show – a sheer rosy pink powder blush ($50, presumably pricier because of the awesome case), Rich Lipstick in Pinkadelic – a creamy warm medium pink lipstick with a satin finish ($30), and Nail Lacquer in Pink Paisley – a powdery baby pink polish ($24). madmenestee3It’s the perfect combination to create that soft-lipped, rosy-flushed sixties face. Very Joan Halloway. Pair it with a cat eye and some soft neutrals on your lids and you’re good to go!

Drink That: Pink Squirrel

This throwback cocktail compliments the Lauder pink sixties vibe perfectly. thepinksquirrelThis particular recipe comes straight from the Mad Men Cocktail Guide, one of my favorite sources to use when I’m cocktailing in my kitchen. Cheers!

¾ oz crème de noyaux
¾ oz crème de cacao
½ oz vodka
1 oz fresh cream

Pour over ice. Stir and serve in martini glass.

The Best: Lip Plumper

I am on a quest for the best! As a makeup artist and beauty blogger I’m constantly asked by clients and readers my opinion on “the best” products. Sure, I have the favs I’ve discovered from years of making faces and professionally reviewing products (not to mention my personal findings from a decade as a beauty addicted consumer)… but there is always something new popping up on the shelves.

So, I set out on a mission for the past year to dig even deeper into the beauty market and familiarize myself with as many products as possible, all in the name of beauty. I’ve been testing (and testing and testing and testing) endless amounts of products, both new and old, in multiple categories to declare one the winner of each type!

Normally there will only be one “best” product, but in my search for the best lip plumper I decided to call this one a tie. The two lip treats to split the crown are (drum roll please!)… Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme and Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Polish!toofacelip

One of these products, the Lip Injection Extreme, is strictly a lip plumper, a clear serum used to gradually increase lip volume over time. It combines vitamin E, collagen-booster MaxiLip and Dehydrated Marine Sponge to stimulate blood flow, promote fullness and re-hydrate the lips. It does sting a little bit at first, but the tingling gradually gets less intense with use over time. Obviously it depends on your pain tolerance, but I don’t think it’s unbearable at all.  The formula also contains avocado and jojoba oil to add to the conditioning properties – total added bonus! A lot of plumping products I’ve tried have left my lips looking bigger, but dry. Not this one! It creates a smooth, supple finish and perfectly preps lips for the application of other lip products. The Lip Injection Extreme is paired with some pretty steep product claims, but after using it for a while I believe them to be true. This stuff is probably the closest you’re going to get to a perfect pout without injectables.buxomdolly

The Buxom Lip Polish is a plumping lip gloss available in a multitude of shades which promotes more of a cosmetic effect and does not claim to create any long term change in lip fullness. It also uses vitamins E for ultimate softness and creates the look of voluptuous lips. It packs a high shine finish without stickiness. I LOVE it. Love the shade selection, love the look, love the feel.

I use them both (why not?) in conjunction with each other for a super plumped pout. Check out this quick video I shot so you can see these two beauties in action:

By the way, the shades of the Buxom Lip gloss I mentioned in the video are Dominique, a clear gloss with iridescent micro glitter, and Dolly, a shimmering muted plum (the shade depicted in the photo above). Dominique is perfect for adding a little glam to any look. Dolly is good for every day wear – I love that one and wear it often like I wear the Melonie shade (shown in video and photo). The Buxom gloss runs $19 (for the full size) and the Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme has a price tag of $28, both available at Sephora. Both are worth it, trust me!

Wearing my favorite combo for a plump pout – Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme and Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Polish.

Salon Spy: Beverly Hot Springs Spa

[Spy Spy is a recurring feature in which I receive treatments from salons and spas all over the nation and rate the service, salon, and overall experience. I have a ton of reviews in the works, but I loved this place so much I bumped it to the top of the list! Since this is my first post in this category, let me preface it by saying that the salons, spas, and service providers I review do not have prior knowledge of who I am or know that I plan to blog about them. I booked a service and paid as any consumer would have. No freebies or bribes here, just the truth on beauty.]

IMG_3541

The rock waterfall at the entrance to the check-in area at Beverly Hot Springs Spa.

While in Los Angeles for the IMATS, I decided to utilize my free time by doing a little spying in one of the country’s most glamorous cities. The first stop on my trip was Beverly Hot Springs, a heavenly oasis nestled between a string of less than luxurious little shops in the Koreatown district of Los Angeles. Before my trip I scoured the internet reading endorsements of the spa from the likes of Sharon Stone and Liv Tyler, so it had a lot to live up to.

As I first pulled up, I wasn’t sure if it was going to meet my expectations because the exterior is nothing special. That quickly changed when I stepped inside to see the most beautiful gigantic rock wall with water cascading down. It was like the most epic relaxation fountain ever. I was greeted by a friendly receptionist who quickly checked me in and led me to an equally sweet spa attendant. I got a quick tour of the dressing area, lockers, bathroom, and primping parlor. Then I was then instructed to get naked.

By the way, when I say naked, I mean NAKED. Not wrapped in fluffy robes and slippers naked, birthday suit and nothing else naked. Boobs out, Spanx off, naked.

After I got over the initial shock of all of the nudity, I stripped down, and hopped into the swirling hot springs pool with a bunch of other naked chicks who did not care one bit that my body parts were hanging out. After spending about two minutes in the spring water all of my insecurities melted away too. Sitting in the alkaline water bubbling up from the hot springs was like wading in silk. The room was dimly lit with rainforest-like décor surrounding the pool. Total insta-vacation.

I was then greeted by a vicious, but wonderful little Korean woman named KJ. She was awesome. KJ lead me to a separate, less beautiful room with several metal tables lined up in a row. There are no modesty blankets or Enya in this room. This room means business.

KJ plopped me on the table like a farm animal and started on my Body Care/Body Scrub Combo by scrubbing down every inch of my body with a seaweed scrub and this really abrasive brush (like a brush you’d find in a barn to brush a horse or something). Trust me when I say every inch. I know what you’re thinking. Does she scrub there? Yes. What about up there? Yes. Everywhere you’re wondering about now, she scrubbed there too.

She flipped me every which way and began slathering on strawberry yogurt all over me and literally massaged it into my skin until it disappeared. I use the term massage loosely because it was really more of a beating. She poured a milk mixture all over me and applied a freshly grated cucumber mask to my face. I started to smell like a salad.

And this is where I lost track of what was happening. There were so many rounds of fresh wonderful smelling potions thrown on my body after that I couldn’t keep up. I got lost in all the yogurt and cucumber goodness. I think there was a honey and pumpkin seed scrub at one point? In between each concoction she doused me in buckets of the hot spring water. It hurt at times, but it was a good hurt.

Once I let go and embraced it, it was awesome.

A makeupless me in the mirror in the primping parlor after my treatment. Beverly Hot Springs provides hair styling tools, q-tips, products and all kinds of complimentary goodies there!

But if you can’t bring yourself to lay backside up on a table with your legs spread, this probably isn’t the place for you.

It was the most serene beating I’ve ever gotten and certainly the most unique spa treatment I’ve ever received. When it was all over, my skin looked better than it ever has. All of the tension I walked in with was gone, too. It was such a liberating and therapeutic experience, so much more than a regular spa treatment.

Honestly, I walked out of there completely revitalized, like I traded my body in for an upgrade. I felt so good. Clean. And comfortable in my own skin. Freckles, love handles, and all.

Spa: Beverly Hot Springs Spa; Los Angeles, CA

Service: Body Care/Body Scrub Combo

Price: $110

Verdict: Worth every penny! An intense spa experience everyone deserves to have at least once. Put this one on your bucket list, ladies.

Wear This/Drink That: Marilyn Monroe Edition

Let’s get real, vodka and lipstick are way better friends than diamonds. So, to celebrate a girl’s real besties (and yesterday’s launch of Three Olives’ Marilyn Monroe Strawberry vodka), I present this week’s beauty and cocktail pairing. Cheers!

MarilynMonroe-Lipstick-LoveGoddess-72Wear This: Love Goddess

One of my favorites from the MAC Marilyn Monroe collection, Love Goddess is a mid-tone pinkish red with a satin finish. I learned its origin during a recent class with Gregory Arlt (who I ADORED, by the way), MAC Makeup Director and designer of the collection. While spilling his red carpet beauty secrets, Arlt mentioned that this lip treat was inspired by a custom color he blended for Marilyn-esque knockout Christina Hendricks. The universally flattering strawberry shade looks best while sipping a matching martini. 😉

MarilynDrink That: The Marilyn

Three Olives’ latest flavor sensation combines the taste of strawberries with a hint of cream, in honor of the Hollywood icon. They also released an assortment of Marilyn inspired recipes including this sweet martini, aptly named The Marilyn:

2 parts Three Olives Marilyn Monroe Vodka

2 parts cranberry juice

Splash of half and half

Mix all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with a strawberry.

Get the Look: Adele’s Grammy Makeup and Hair

adelebeautymain Adele’s Grammy gown may be getting mixed reviews, but there’s no doubt that the cheeky songstress was glowing. Adele, clad in a bold print a la vintage inspired Valentino, rocked her signature cat eye with high volume lashes and a soft pink pout. I just had to know, so I got the scoop on what products celebrity makeup artist and hair stylist Michael Ashton used to create Adele’s romantic Grammy look.

contcremeMakeup

To enhance her flawless complexion, Michael applied Armani Maestro Foundation in Shade 3 with Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat to highlight the high planes of her face. For her statement eye, he created a thick cat eye using Maybelline Studio Gel Liner in Black. coralOn her lids, he painted  on Lancôme Color Design Infinité 24H Eye  Shadow in Continuous Creme, a light matte beige cream eyeshadow in a crease free, smudge-proof formula. He contoured her eye with the Lancôme Color Design 5 Shadow & Liner Palette in Coral Crush. He framed her eye using Lancôme Le Crayon Poudre brow pencil on her brows. After applying some serious false lashes, he swept on Lancôme Hypnôse Star Mascara in Noir Midnight.

Her pink pout was concocted with MyFace Lip Liner in Nude with a wash of Armani Lip Maestro Number 500. Michael finished her lip with  Sisley Phyto Lip Star Lip Gloss in White Diamond.adele-grammy-updo-h724

Hairstyle

For her swept up coiffure, Michael used all John Frieda products. He offered these steps to recreate the look:blowout

Step 1: Prep

Apply the new Luxurious Volume Fine to Full Blow-Out Spray ($9.99 at drugstores) to wet hair before blow-drying with a medium sized round brush, paying particular attention to the ends to ensure they are bouncy and luscious. This heat activated spray will help ensure you build volume that will last but won’t be too sticky.

Step 2: Style

Next set in hot rollers. Once cool, carefully brushed through with a natural bristle brush.

Step 3: Perfect

Finish off the look by twisting the back section into a French twist and pin away from the face. Mist with Luxurious Volume All-Day Hold Hairspray ($5.99 at drugstores) to ensure the updo stays in place all night long.

Martinis and Mascara’s Picks for Best Dressed at the Grammys

Glamour oozed all over the red carpet on music’s biggest night. My pick for best dressed overall? Carrie Underwood, in a stunningly ornate strapless Roberto Cavalli gown (and over $30 million in diamonds). And representing the dudes, Adam Levine doing the monochromatic black tux thing, complete with bow tie and hot shades. Drool.

Martinisbestdressed

I also loved these gowns:

The 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards - Arrivals

Kelly Rowland in a fierce black (and dangerously sheer) Georges Chakra cutout gown. A serious dress code pusher.

katyperry

Katy Perry showcasing her silhouette and channeling 70s era Priscilla Presley in a mint green Gucci gown (and shockingly subdued makeup, for her).

Here are some other notable beauty looks that lit up the red carpet:

adele2Powerhouse vocalist Adele wearing a dramatic eye with serious falsies and powerful liner to match. Loved her statement eye and also her loose romantic updo.

rihanna2

A soft and glamorous Rihanna wearing a bold red lip, perfectly highlighted skin, and beautifully styled subtle ombre curls.

I feel some tutorials coming on… 🙂

The IMATS Experience

DSC_0347Coinciding with the fabulous 100th issue of Makeup Artist Magazine, industry leaders and artists from around the globe flocked to the International Makeup Artist Trade Show, the mother of all makeup conventions. The show, produced by the mag annually in 6 different venues worldwide, had been on my beauty bucket list for quite some time, so I’m ecstatic that I was finally able to experience it. After months of planning (facilitated by the awesome IMATS interactive app) I ventured out to Los Angeles over the weekend to soak it all in.

It was total sensory overload from the moment I stepped inside the Pasadena Convention Center. Giant flying monkeys, fantasy makeup models on stilts, chiseled dudes covered in body paint – you name it, it was walking around. And it was beautiful.

The talent level in the room was insane. Top notch speakers, demonstrators and exhibitors were totally accessible, on hand to answer questions and share insight from their successful careers.

DSC_0097On the exhibit floor, five time Emmy Award winning makeup artist Eve Pearl demonstrated tips and techniques using her signature line of cosmetics. I’m still kicking myself for not hopping in her chair!

Eve was showcasing a look using her Flawless Face Palette which I absolutely adore. The handy palette includes all you need to create glowing complexion – her lightweight cream foundations in two shades (for creating depth), a mattifier and an illuminator to alter the finish of the makeup, two shades of cream concealers for color correction, and a coordinating shade of cream blush. Love.

frankinstaOther exhibitors offered live demonstrations including the Crown Brush booth, which featured demos by cast members from seasons 1-4 of the popular SyFy makeup reality show, Face Off. (There I am to the left with artist/goofball Frank Ippolito of Season 1).

The event also included multiple stages for larger scale demonstrations and several classrooms for hands-on workshops. My main stage favorites were the RED Camera Panel featuring several Oscar winning (and currently nominated) artists and also the Red Carpet Beauty demonstration by Gregory Arlt, Director of Makeup Artistry for MAC Cosmetics.DSC_0086edit

The RED Camera Panel included Ted Schilowitz, co-founder of RED Digital Camera, as well as highly successful makeup artists Howard Berger, Peter Montagna, Tami Lane, and Vivian Baker. Both Howard and Peter are currently nominated for Academy Awards for their work on Hitchcock and Tami is in the running for The Hobbit.

Ted presented several movie trailers to illustrate the difference in the look of films shot in 4K (like The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) vs. those shot with the latest and greatest RED camera technology such as the Epic which utilizes a 5K sensor (The Great Gatsby, Hitchcock, Oz the Great and Powerful). The artists on the panel discussed the makeup related speed bumps involved with such state of the art technology and also shared behind the scenes photos from their films (including some never before seen shots of Oz that Howard sold his soul to Disney to get). I was drooling.

MAC Makeup Director Gregory Arlt’s Red Carpet Beauty demo was also a ton of fun. He was so personable and knowledgeable – it was extremely evident why he is the director of one of the most popular (if not the most popular) mainstream makeup companies. I love how free and open he was with detailing the exact products and shades he uses for certain looks. (Keep an eye out for my more in depth post detailing Gregory’s tips and tricks and the formulas he uses on certain celebrities!)

DSC_0003Another show highlight was the makeup museum. Greeting artists at the entrance were Michonne’s iconic jawless pets from The Walking Dead (by KNB EFX, a company created by the aforementioned Howard Berger and the equally awesome Greg Nicotero). The aisles were lined with monster magic and expertly crafted prosthetic pieces from some of my favorite films… which may or may not include Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny. Lighten up critics, Dave Grohl rocking out as the devil was classic cinematic entertainment.IMG_3760

And then, of course, there was the shopping. Ooooh, the shopping! Brands drastically dropped their regular retail prices and some offered killer additional discounts for pros (thank you, Nigel’s Beauty Emporium!) in addition to the awesome show specials. I stocked up on the essentials and also snagged the Makeup Forever Flash Palette for like 40 bucks. Score!

It was an incredible experience… and I definitely had a tough time packing up and leaving beautiful Pasadena. My only regret is not taking more classes. Oh well, I’ll just have to make up for that at IMATS New York 😉

Head over to Facebook to see my gallery of IMATS photos. And stay tuned to Martinis and Mascara for my upcoming Salon Spy reviews of all of the treatments and services I received in LA while in town for the show!
