Behind the Scenes: My Allure Magazine Beauty Blogger Awards Photo Shoot

DSC_0920edit

True confession: I have daydreamed about walking into the Conde Nast building since I was the editor-in-chief of my high school yearbook. So, to say that visiting the Allure offices was exciting for me would be a massive understatement.

Since those days I’ve often second guessed my career path… I began on the journalism route then took a severe left turn when I embarked on my journey into the beauty industry… before ultimately ending up trying to make a name for myself in a field that’s a strange hybrid of both.

It was when I was inside the elevator at 4 Times Square, on my way up to the photo studio for my shoot, that it clicked. That every decision I have made, traditional or not, has lead me to this moment. And this moment is awesome.

elevator

The studio was incredible – almost as incredible as the rows of designer shoes awaiting my freshly pedicured feet. Cara, Tati (who are both just as sweet and beautiful as they are on their blogs, btw!) and I were whisked into a rotation of fashion fittings, manicures, makeup sessions, and hair styling.

boards

It’s no secret that I am not a sample size… so I was a little nervous about how they were planning to style my wardrobe. Then I laid eyes on my rack of killer dresses from Diane von Furstenberg, Zac Posen, Jason Wu, and Michael Kors and those fears quickly faded! I ended up wearing a beautiful black, curve-friendly Diane von Furstenberg dress (top left in the style board photo) and…wait for it… a pair of electric blue Manolo Blahniks. Hello, lover!

DSC_0854

I am determined to own these heels one day. And by one day, I mean when the Manolo Blahnik Fall 2013 Collection hits stores in September. Can you start a Kickstarter campaign for shoes? Is that a thing?

Nail expert (and longtime Marc Jacobs manicurist) Elisa Ferri toned down my bright summer nails to create a more season appropriate look for the fall issue. She used Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour in Beige. It’s a gorgeous neutral tone with a subtle iridescent shine. I never want to take it off.

DSC_0874

I was a bit nervous about having my makeup done because I’m so particular about how I do it. Well, that worrying was completely unnecessary because brilliant artist Junko Kioka was the mastermind behind my makeup that day. I was furiously taking notes on the products she was using… and will most definitely add some of them to my own kit soon (Kett Fix Crème makeup, Estee Lauder DoubleWear, and Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage to name a few). I don’t think I’ve ever felt more beautiful!

DSC_0899editre

The amazing DJ Quintero upped the glam factor even more and gave me some major Veronica Lake meets Jessica Rabbit hair. He set it with Serge Normant Meta Luxe Hair Spray. My hair was touchable and soft, but the style stayed perfectly intact. That stuff is miraculous!

Each of us had our own set in the studio, brilliantly crafted by Allure Fashion Editor J rod Lacks and photographer Jason McDonald. I won’t spoil too much detail on that – you’ll have to buy the October issue of Allure to see the finished product!

Here are some more backstage highlights from the shoot:

After our whirlwind photo shoot, we embarked on a tour of the Allure offices, complete with a stop at the beauty mecca that is the Allure beauty closet (more on that later). Here’s a peek at my stash:

As if the day couldn’t get any better, we were invited to meet and chat with editor-in-chief (and author of Allure: Confessions of a Beauty Editor) Linda Wells.

Linda Wells

It. Was. Amazing.

Thank you again to everyone reading this for all of your support during the contest and beyond. I would not have been able to experience this memorable day if it weren’t for you!

I’m back in Florida for now… but I’m definitely stuck in a New York state of mind. Stay tuned for more (yes, more!) on my Allure experience… including my top ten picks from the Allure beauty closet!

Salon Spy: Colorist Hair Studio & Spa

colorist2

Nestled within the 150 Worth plaza on Palm Beach, this Aveda flagship salon has the best ambiance of any salon I’ve set foot in recently. I felt like I was stepping into an artist’s loft in New York. A decorative mural covers the entire wall where the easel style stylist stations are. I loved it at first look!

My experience started out with a hot cup of Aveda tea, an herbal blend with hints of licorice and peppermint. So relaxing. I was then greeted by the amazing Jessica Rosmery Pamplona, Colorist owner and expert stylist who did a thorough consultation (so important) before starting my color.beforeaftercolorist

She took a look at my hair and noticed I have a lot of color history (guilty!) going on. At one point, my long locks had ombre, some highlights, all kinds of stuff that was showing through my faded red color. I wanted to freshen my look without changing it too drastically. I said I’d like to keep the bright red base tones but lighten and punch up the ends a little to bring back a little more of the ombre effect.Hair

She was incredibly knowledgeable, knew exactly what I was asking for and executed it perfectly. She revived my root area with a rich red and lightened pieces by section using the balayage technique before applying orange pure pigment to my ends. It is now multidimensional with red tones that melt into this funky vibrant orange. She also created a true body and soul experience by offering a relaxing Chakra Balancing session while my color processed. She shaped up my cut by adding a few layers and finished the look with voluminous bouncing curls and height at the crown. Movie star hair!

I LOVE my fiery ‘do and I would definitely recommend her services! Colorist also offers a slew of fun spa treatments like the Rosemary Mint Awakening Body Treatment and the Caribbean Therapy Pedicure. Oh, and Colorist officially has the most comfortable shampoo bowls I’ve ever set my head in. Plus ten points for that!

Salon: Colorist Hair Studio & Spa; 150 Worth Ave. Suite 213, Palm Beach, FL

Service: Color and cut

Verdict: I had a really enjoyable experience from start to finish and I love my vibrant color!

Obsession of the Day: Kiehl’s Skin Tone Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream

kiehlsHappy summer, martini lovers! Friday marked the summer solstice, so in honor of the official start of the season I’m presenting one of my summer kit essentials: Kiehl’s Skin Tone Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream.

I have to be honest – I am not usually a fan of BB Creams for my own personal use. My pale acneic skin is usually hiding behind a layer of full coverage foundation. #Truth. Needless to say, the lightweight moisturizing wonders that are BB Creams usually don’t meet my coverage standards.

Enter Kiehl’s BB Cream, the answer to my prayers! I’ve used quite a few different brands, all with their own textures and tones, and this is honestly one of my favorites. The formula utilizes natural mineral pigments to conceal flaws beautifully. It’s lightweight, but provides buildable coverage. It’s also packed with Vitamin C and broad spectrum UV filters to protect against the sun’s harmful rays. The ingredient list does not include any parabens, fragrances, silicone, or mineral oil. It’s great for those with sensitive skin or fair skinned gals like me who burn easily. Wear this and your hydrated, healthy skin will thank you!

Obsession of the Day: Beauty Bumps

Beauty Bump Bags and bump BoxesAn innovative hair growth supplement, Beauty Bumps GROW utilizes high quality vegan ingredients specifically formulated to lengthen locks up to 42%. Beauty Bumps is the brainchild of power trio Peter and Mark Hasche-DeRosa, owners of the high end PeterMark Salon, and Erin Heit, marketing guru behind a slew of successful products including Glaceau Vitamin Water.

They’ve taken the beauty supplement concept to the next level, promoting overall health by including ingredients like immune-boosting Zinc and stress-fighting Ashwaganda. In addition to boasting an impressive blend of vitamins, the chewable supplements are also mint flavored and dusted with 23K edible gold for an added element of luxury. What’s not to love? It’s edgier and more fun than your basic hair pill – and effective too!

Here’s a breakdown of the key ingredients and their benefits:

Tocomin – A breakthrough ingredient that has a US Patent for hair growth.

Biotin – Makes your hair grow faster.

Silica – Helps strengthen hair, makes it less likely for hair to become brittle or develop split ends, prevents hair loss and creates shinier strands.

Resveratrol – A powerful anti-oxidant that supports anti-aging and improves circulation.

Ashwaganda – Combats stress, anxiety and exhaustion caused by physical and mental strain.

23K Gold – Because you’re worth it!

I just started taking the supplements a couple weeks ago, so I can’t vouch for the 42% growth rate claim just yet, but I’m loving the results so far! Keep an eye out in a few months for my full Beauty Bumps update and visit www.beautybumps.com to order a bag and get your bump on with me!

It’s official! I’m Allure Magazine’s Most Buzzworthy Blogger of the Year!

Ok, so I know in my last post I said I’d be happy whether I earned a fancy title or not… but guess what?

buzzworthyfinal

I earned two fancy titles!! Who even knew that could happen?! I’ve been floating since noon on Tuesday when Allure magazine published the official Beauty Blogger Awards “Meet the Winners” page. When the clock struck 12 and I saw my face pop up there twice I almost fell out of my chair! I am officially the Most Buzzworthy Blogger of the Year… and I also claimed a runner-up spot for the overall contest. Not too shabby! I’m so so thankful to all of you out there who helped get me to this point. I couldn’t have done it without you!

katiealluresecondrunner

The fiercest of them all Mally Roncal said she thinks I’m fun and the adorably awesome Coca Rocha said she related to my hangover beauty solutions entry. Whhhaaat?!

My head is still spinning from the whole thing. Next on the agenda of my whirlwind Allure experience is a trip to New York for the official photoshoot sometime within the next few weeks. The photos from that shoot, along with a feature story on us winners will appear in the October 2013 issue of Allure. Don’t worry, I’ll remind you to pick up a copy before then! 😉

Thank you all again for reading, liking, sharing, tweeting, and for your general awesomeness throughout the past five weeks. I feel like such a huge chapter is closing, but an even bigger one is just beginning. Stay tuned to Martinis and Mascara for lots more news, reviews, and advice – served to you straight up! Cheers!!martini

Voting for the Allure Beauty Blogger Awards officially closes at noon today!

bbaToday marks the closing of the final round of the 2013 Allure Beauty Blogger Awards. These five weeks have been incredible. This has been without a doubt, one of the busiest, craziest, happiest, most productive time periods of my life.

I know I sound like a broken record at this point, but I really can’t put into words exactly how much it means to me that my readers, coworkers, family, friends, and some people who don’t even know me, have banded together to create such a support system for me. It’s still blowing my mind that so many of you put yourselves out there, week after week, asking for votes on my behalf! The amount of people pulling for me, sharing the voting links, and tweeting away over the last five weeks is just unbelievable. I was voted “Most Buzzworthy” for four weeks in a row… and I could not have done that without you guys!

I really poured my heart into these contest entries and I’m so glad that I made it through every elimination so I could share all five of the challenges with you. I am so honored to have made it to the final four, but honestly, I feel like I won when I got that first call from Allure. This contest has been an incredibly validating experience. I can’t even describe how good it feels to know that the experts at the leading beauty magazine in the country think that I create quality content. So, no matter what the final verdict is, I’ll be happy whether I earn a fancy title or not.

Onward and upward! 😉

Here’s what happens now…

  • At noon today, the voting officially ends, and I stop begging for votes and cluttering your Facebook/Twitter feeds.
  • I pretend I’m not freaking out until Tuesday at noon when the Beauty Blogger of the Year, two runner-ups, and Most Buzzworthy Blogger titles are announced.
  • Cocktails for all of us. Lots of ‘em!

[P.S. For the last time (::sniff::), don’t forget to vote for me, Katie McBroom, to help me become Allure Magazine’s Beauty Blogger of the Year! Voting for the 2013 Allure Beauty Blogger Awards closes today at noon. It would mean the world to me if you could take a minute to do this! Remember, by voting for me you become eligible to win awesome prizes like a trip for two to Hawaii!]

Summer Beauty Survival Guide

Bust out the bronzer, ladies – summertime is approaching! Seasonal changes often bring beauty obstacles, but my roundup of must-haves will keep you fresh, glowing, and protected in the summer sun!

bumble

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray

Perfect for creating sexy, windswept waves, this cult favorite is formulated with sea kelp extract to bring the essence of the beach to your strands. It adds body and texture with a light hold and matte finish. Just work through damp hair and blow dry with a diffuser for sun-dried summer locks.

prevention_plus_daily_tinited_moisterizer_grande

Image Prevention+ Daily Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30

I’m a longtime Image Skincare fan, but I just recently discovered the Prevention+ Daily Tinted Moisturizer. The vitamin enriched moisturizer provides an even complexion while protecting against the damaging effects of the sun. It is light, non-greasy and – my favorite part – it doesn’t smell like sunscreen! Wear the fresh scented moisturizer alone for a day in the sun, or use under foundation for more coverage. Either way, this one’s a keeper!

nars

NARS Beach Lover

This makeup set is packed with essentials required to create a bronze summer glow. Iconic NARS shades in the batch include the duo of Hungry Heart (a golden ivory shimmer highlight powder) and Orgasm (a peachy pink with golden shimmer blush). The duo is a staple in my makeup kit. This five piece travel set also contains the limited-edition Laguna lip gloss, matching illuminator in Laguna, and a Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Skorpios, an iridescent copper.

MAC-Temperature-Rising-75301

MAC Temperature Rising Powerchrome Eye Pencils

I checked these babies out at a MAC preview event earlier this week before the Temperature Rising collection officially hits the shelves May 23rd (more on the full collection later!) and fell in love. The texture is AMAZING, super creamy and blendable. The metallic gold shade of Rich Glance is my fav, but all four highly pigmented pencils are worth a look.

sephcocktail

Sephora Collection Cocktail on the Beach Palette

Who can resist a cocktail on the beach? This complete shadow and liner palette is packed with expertly coordinated shades of summer. Cocktail on the Beach features a quad of shimmering bronzes, corals, and golds, paired with a deep brown matte liner. Sephora even includes step-by-step instructions for different eye looks on the back!

Endless Summer

Lipstick Queen Endless Summer Lipsticks

These soft, nourishing, ultra glossy lipsticks are perfect for a pop of summertime color! The lipstick queen herself, Poppy King, found inspiration for the shades in the iconic surfing movie of the same name in which two surfers travel the world in pursuit of an endless summer. Not only are these lip treats bright and stylish – they are infused with Vitamin E and sheer enough to wear anytime. My favorite color in the collection is Perfect Wave, a punchy pop pink.

udchill

Urban Decay Chill Makeup Setting Spray

Avoid makeup meltdown with this hydrating makeup setting spray. It mists on to keep makeup from smudging while allowing you to keep that dewy complexion. The weightless, moisture-resistant setting spray utilizes cooling time-release technology that works for up to 12 hours.

arro

Arrojo Protective Thickening Lotion

Protect your strands with amazing stylist Nick Arrojo’s thickening lotion. This light spray deflects UV rays, humidity and the drying effects of salt water and chlorine. It prevents breakage, adds body, and is the perfect size to throw in your beach bag.

[P.S. Don’t forget to vote for me, Katie McBroom, to help me become Allure Magazine’s Beauty Blogger of the Year! Voting for the 2013 Allure Beauty Blogger Awards closes Friday at noon.
