Obsession of the Day: Kiehl’s Skin Tone Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream

kiehlsHappy summer, martini lovers! Friday marked the summer solstice, so in honor of the official start of the season I’m presenting one of my summer kit essentials: Kiehl’s Skin Tone Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream.

I have to be honest – I am not usually a fan of BB Creams for my own personal use. My pale acneic skin is usually hiding behind a layer of full coverage foundation. #Truth. Needless to say, the lightweight moisturizing wonders that are BB Creams usually don’t meet my coverage standards.

Enter Kiehl’s BB Cream, the answer to my prayers! I’ve used quite a few different brands, all with their own textures and tones, and this is honestly one of my favorites. The formula utilizes natural mineral pigments to conceal flaws beautifully. It’s lightweight, but provides buildable coverage. It’s also packed with Vitamin C and broad spectrum UV filters to protect against the sun’s harmful rays. The ingredient list does not include any parabens, fragrances, silicone, or mineral oil. It’s great for those with sensitive skin or fair skinned gals like me who burn easily. Wear this and your hydrated, healthy skin will thank you!

Summer Beauty Survival Guide

Bust out the bronzer, ladies – summertime is approaching! Seasonal changes often bring beauty obstacles, but my roundup of must-haves will keep you fresh, glowing, and protected in the summer sun!

bumble

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray

Perfect for creating sexy, windswept waves, this cult favorite is formulated with sea kelp extract to bring the essence of the beach to your strands. It adds body and texture with a light hold and matte finish. Just work through damp hair and blow dry with a diffuser for sun-dried summer locks.

prevention_plus_daily_tinited_moisterizer_grande

Image Prevention+ Daily Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30

I’m a longtime Image Skincare fan, but I just recently discovered the Prevention+ Daily Tinted Moisturizer. The vitamin enriched moisturizer provides an even complexion while protecting against the damaging effects of the sun. It is light, non-greasy and – my favorite part – it doesn’t smell like sunscreen! Wear the fresh scented moisturizer alone for a day in the sun, or use under foundation for more coverage. Either way, this one’s a keeper!

nars

NARS Beach Lover

This makeup set is packed with essentials required to create a bronze summer glow. Iconic NARS shades in the batch include the duo of Hungry Heart (a golden ivory shimmer highlight powder) and Orgasm (a peachy pink with golden shimmer blush). The duo is a staple in my makeup kit. This five piece travel set also contains the limited-edition Laguna lip gloss, matching illuminator in Laguna, and a Soft Touch Shadow Pencil in Skorpios, an iridescent copper.

MAC-Temperature-Rising-75301

MAC Temperature Rising Powerchrome Eye Pencils

I checked these babies out at a MAC preview event earlier this week before the Temperature Rising collection officially hits the shelves May 23rd (more on the full collection later!) and fell in love. The texture is AMAZING, super creamy and blendable. The metallic gold shade of Rich Glance is my fav, but all four highly pigmented pencils are worth a look.

sephcocktail

Sephora Collection Cocktail on the Beach Palette

Who can resist a cocktail on the beach? This complete shadow and liner palette is packed with expertly coordinated shades of summer. Cocktail on the Beach features a quad of shimmering bronzes, corals, and golds, paired with a deep brown matte liner. Sephora even includes step-by-step instructions for different eye looks on the back!

Endless Summer

Lipstick Queen Endless Summer Lipsticks

These soft, nourishing, ultra glossy lipsticks are perfect for a pop of summertime color! The lipstick queen herself, Poppy King, found inspiration for the shades in the iconic surfing movie of the same name in which two surfers travel the world in pursuit of an endless summer. Not only are these lip treats bright and stylish – they are infused with Vitamin E and sheer enough to wear anytime. My favorite color in the collection is Perfect Wave, a punchy pop pink.

udchill

Urban Decay Chill Makeup Setting Spray

Avoid makeup meltdown with this hydrating makeup setting spray. It mists on to keep makeup from smudging while allowing you to keep that dewy complexion. The weightless, moisture-resistant setting spray utilizes cooling time-release technology that works for up to 12 hours.

arro

Arrojo Protective Thickening Lotion

Protect your strands with amazing stylist Nick Arrojo’s thickening lotion. This light spray deflects UV rays, humidity and the drying effects of salt water and chlorine. It prevents breakage, adds body, and is the perfect size to throw in your beach bag.

Mother’s Day Gift Guide

Didn’t do anything for Mom yet? Never fear! You procrastinators still have time to scoop something up. Or you could skip the present and treat Mom to a day of beauty with her daughter! Either way, here are a few fun beauty ideas at all different price points for Mom…

eliz2

Elizabeth Arden Beauty Icons Set

This signature set ($250) contains several full sized Arden products that have reached cult status including the Ceramide Capsules Daily Youth Restoring Serum and Visible Difference Hydration Boost Night Mask. To me, this is a quintessential batch of tried-and-true products for mom… probably because one of my first beauty product memories is seeing the Ceramide Capsules on my own mom’s nightstand when I was little.

rome1

Bath and Body Works Rome Honeysuckle Amore Collection

Not all of us can afford to send our Moms to Italy, but we can make her smell like it! Create the atmosphere of a stroll through one of Italy’s most glamorous cities with this “Rome scented” set of products. I’m addicted to this light fruity floral fragrance. Hints of Italian Peach, Blackberry and Green Mandarin mingle beautifully with the Pink Honeysuckle. Affordable, lusciously scented options in the collection include shower gel ($11), body lotion ($11), and a fine fragrance mist ($14).

mdinp

LUSH Mother’s Day in Paradise

It’s no secret that I love me some LUSH… and they are always whipping up something fresh for special occasions. The Mother’s Day in Paradise set ($56.95) features some of the line’s most popular picks: The Comforter, a best-selling bubble bar, and Dream Cream body lotion. Mother’s Day in Paradise also includes three freshly made exclusives, the Secret Garden Bath Bomb, Mumkin bubble bar, and Madame Butterfly reusable bubble bar.

diormani2Dior Manicure Essentials Set

This convenient kit ($62) offers the essentials required for perfectly manicured nails. The limited edition set includes Dior bestsellers like Crème Apricot nail cream, Pelline cuticle emollient, a base coat and top coat, and an orange wood stick and nail file. All goodies are packaged in a chic patent travel pouch, too!

glossybox

Beauty Box Subscription

Ok, if you subscribe for her now, chances are she won’t get her box of goodies before Sunday… but the beauty of this option is that she’ll get an ongoing series of gifts! Birchbox and Glossybox are two of the most popular, both feature a variety of brand new deluxe product samples delivered straight to your door each month.

drybar

Mother/Daughter Beauty Day

Many salons like Drybar (remember how much I love Drybar?) are offering Mother’s Day deals. The blowout experts are offering specially priced packs of blowouts. The more you buy, the more you save! A 3 pack of blowouts will run for $90 (a $15 savings) and a 12 pack costs $325 (a $95 savings!). Drybar also offers a Mother’s Day Special package with a blowout, dry shampoo, and shower cap for $55. Not in your budget? Treat mom to a service at home! Blow out her hair yourself or create a makeshift pedi-spa and paint her nails. If you completely screw it up it won’t matter, she’s your mom and she will love it! (But… if you have one of those moms, you should probably just take her to Drybar).

When all else fails… make Mom a martini. Nothing says “thanks for raising me” like a freshly shaken cocktail. 😉 Happy Mother’s Day to all!

My Etsy Beauty Favorites

Let’s hear it for the little guys! Fancy packaging paired with a high price tag does not necessarily equal quality. Some of my favorite products were custom blended with love by home grown companies. Want to support some local entrepreneurs and independent companies with me? Here are a handful of my homemade favorites that I’ve found via Etsy, the ultimate handmade marketplace!

il_570xN.432036970_i80q

OhSudz Skin Corrector Trio

The quality of these concealers is just as good (if not better than) some of the professional creams I’ve tried of the same type. OhSudz offers a trio of shades of your choice and even lists similar department store shades for comparison. Included in the shade choices are two yellow tones to choose from, a regular yellow based tone and a light yellow. The light yellow is perfect for me – it works great as a highlighter and also conceals purple tones underneath my eyes like a charm!

noella

Noella Beauty Mineral Foundation

Noella Beauty’s Mineral Foundation is a blend of calming minerals offered in the coverage level of your choice, from sheer to full. The vegan foundation comes in an assortment of shades and blends effortlessly into the skin for a natural looking finish. Noella Beauty will even custom blend a shade for you if you desire a specific tone they don’t offer!

il_570xN.438838272_faac

PuraLogica Pink Pearl Radiant Glow Blush

I loooove the silky texture and shimmery finish of PuraLogica’s Radiant Glow Blush. The pink pearl shade is a soft pink packed with the right amount of luminescent shine. It also doubles as a really pretty eyeshadow. The loose mineral blush is also free of talc, oil, and other ingredients that can cause skin irritation.

il_570xN.306517207

Long Winter Soap Co. Lip Balm

I’m a total sucker for a catchy title. Long Winter Soap Company immediately won me over with their “Unicorn Farts” lip balm. I was doubly pleased when I tested it out! It smells amazing (who knew?) and soothes chapped lips completely. The balm is created using natural beeswax, unrefined cocoa butter, unrefined shea butter, and vitamin E, as well as jojoba, sweet almond, grape seed, and flavor oils. It’s carefully formulated to provide an equal balance of protection and softness without that waxy feeling. My other favorite balm flavors from Long Winter Soap include Lavender Peach, Coconut Limeade, and Earl Grey.

il_570xN.395755922_77ni

JustPureMinerals Natural Vegan Lipstick

This universally flattering pinky nude tone is the perfect shade for daytime wear. The formula consists of castor oil, jojoba oil, carnauba wax, candied candelilla wax, titanium dioxide, iron oxides, and mica. Also infused with a hint of mint, the lipstick is creamy and glides on smooth for a beautiful natural looking pout.

Obsession of the Day: Liptini

flirtini

Flirtini Lipstick

The makeup mixologists over at the ‘Tini Beauty Lounge share the Martinis and Mascara philosophy – that cosmetics are more fun with cocktails involved!

The ‘Tini Bar is stocked with top shelf cosmetics designed to wear however you please, straight-up or layered. Each branch of the line – Liptini, Nailtini, and Eyetini – features an assortment of base colors as well as mixers and toppers to create your own custom look. My cocktail of choice? A Flirtini with a little Bellini on top!

bellini

Bellini Lip Gloss

The Flirtini lipstick was designed exclusively for Liptini by celeb makeup artist Terri Apanasewicz who has polished stars liked Cindy Crawford and the country crooners of Lady Antebellum. It has a velvety long-wearing formula spiked with pomegranate and aloe butters. Worn solo, Flirtini is the perfect nude lip shade to pair with a smokey eye. I like to top it off with a swipe of Bellini to glam it up for a glossier finish. Bellini also looks beautiful on its own and creates a really pretty peachy pout.

Liptini even offers a guide for budding bartenders to wade through their 11 Straight-Up Colors, 6 Mixer Lip Base Pencils, 11 Lip Lacquer Stains, 6 Cordials, and 15 Topper Lip Glosses on tap. The possibilities are endless. Cheers to that!

Obsession of the Day: Blinc Liquid Eyeliner Pen

eyeliner-pen2Time for another obsession of the day! I’m usually partial to gel liners, but I recently fell in love with Blinc’s water-resistant, no-smudge liquid eyeliner pen.

Blinc, known for pushing the beauty envelope with their innovative products like “tubed” mascara, has concocted another breakthrough formula with this liquid liner. Unlike traditional cosmetic paints, it creates a layer of color that contours to your eyes and actually sits on top of your skin. No fading, bleeding, smudging, running, or flaking!

In the past I have veered away from liquid formulas because I usually find them harder to control than gels or pencils… but not with this baby! The foolproof firm tip applicator (similar to a long felt-tipped pen) essentially forces you to create a straight line. It’s perfect for creating thick, classic winged cat eye looks. blinceyeliner3Thin, natural lines more of your thing? Blinc also carries a smaller eyeliner pen utilizing the same formula with a thinner, more flexible brush applicator (measuring only 0.01 millimeters) for ultimate precision. In the photo, I’m wearing the regular Liquid Eyeliner Pen on my top lid and the Ultrathin Liquid Eyeliner under my lower lash line.

Another bonus is the effortless ease of removal. It “peels” off with just gentle pressure and warm water – no eye makeup remover required. Cheers to that!

The Best: Lip Plumper

I am on a quest for the best! As a makeup artist and beauty blogger I’m constantly asked by clients and readers my opinion on “the best” products. Sure, I have the favs I’ve discovered from years of making faces and professionally reviewing products (not to mention my personal findings from a decade as a beauty addicted consumer)… but there is always something new popping up on the shelves.

So, I set out on a mission for the past year to dig even deeper into the beauty market and familiarize myself with as many products as possible, all in the name of beauty. I’ve been testing (and testing and testing and testing) endless amounts of products, both new and old, in multiple categories to declare one the winner of each type!

Normally there will only be one “best” product, but in my search for the best lip plumper I decided to call this one a tie. The two lip treats to split the crown are (drum roll please!)… Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme and Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Polish!toofacelip

One of these products, the Lip Injection Extreme, is strictly a lip plumper, a clear serum used to gradually increase lip volume over time. It combines vitamin E, collagen-booster MaxiLip and Dehydrated Marine Sponge to stimulate blood flow, promote fullness and re-hydrate the lips. It does sting a little bit at first, but the tingling gradually gets less intense with use over time. Obviously it depends on your pain tolerance, but I don’t think it’s unbearable at all.  The formula also contains avocado and jojoba oil to add to the conditioning properties – total added bonus! A lot of plumping products I’ve tried have left my lips looking bigger, but dry. Not this one! It creates a smooth, supple finish and perfectly preps lips for the application of other lip products. The Lip Injection Extreme is paired with some pretty steep product claims, but after using it for a while I believe them to be true. This stuff is probably the closest you’re going to get to a perfect pout without injectables.buxomdolly

The Buxom Lip Polish is a plumping lip gloss available in a multitude of shades which promotes more of a cosmetic effect and does not claim to create any long term change in lip fullness. It also uses vitamins E for ultimate softness and creates the look of voluptuous lips. It packs a high shine finish without stickiness. I LOVE it. Love the shade selection, love the look, love the feel.

I use them both (why not?) in conjunction with each other for a super plumped pout. Check out this quick video I shot so you can see these two beauties in action:

By the way, the shades of the Buxom Lip gloss I mentioned in the video are Dominique, a clear gloss with iridescent micro glitter, and Dolly, a shimmering muted plum (the shade depicted in the photo above). Dominique is perfect for adding a little glam to any look. Dolly is good for every day wear – I love that one and wear it often like I wear the Melonie shade (shown in video and photo). The Buxom gloss runs $19 (for the full size) and the Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme has a price tag of $28, both available at Sephora. Both are worth it, trust me!

Wearing my favorite combo for a plump pout – Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme and Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Polish.

Lady Gaga Gets Darker as Debut Fragrance Hits the Market

Little monsters everywhere can finally get their paws on Gaga’s debut fragrance, Fame. The highly buzzed about perfume hit the shelves this week, in conjunction with Gaga’s transition to the dark side. (I think that “Louis Vuitton brown” dye job is just a stepping stone to full on ebony hair transformation!) She’s designing the world’s first black fluid fragrance, darkening her hair, dating a werewolf, and so on. It’s pretty evident what Gaga’s next phase is and I dig it.

I also dig the fragrance. I was a little nervous when reports first started surfacing last year that Mother Monster was going to create a scent that smells like “blood and semen.” Remember that? My nose and I can now tell you that this is not the case with Fame, which launched officially on Wednesday.

In expected Gaga style, she launched a full-fledge high fashion campaign in anticipation for this week’s nationwide release. The campaign, complete with larger than life print ads and a series of videos, was shot by visionary photographer and director Steven Klein (the mastermind behind many Madonna concert backdrop videos). Klein’s provocative trailer is currently out for the full length campaign film, slated for release Sept. 13 at the Guggenheim Museum.

The first of its’ kind, the inky fluid appears black in the bottle and turns transparent once airborne by utilizing innovative patent-pending technology, launched exclusively with Fame. The perfume was tested, perfected and produced in Gaga’s own Parisian lab, Haus Labratories.

Instead of going straight for shocking, the artist formerly known as Stefani Germanotta managed to strike an equal balance of edgy and elegant. Fame is sophisticated, a floral and fruity essence, featuring a rich floral layer of crushed Tiger Orchid and Jasmine Sambac, and a fusion of dripping honey, saffron and apricot nectar. Leveling out the fragrance is the star ingredient, inspired by the toxic, yet beautiful belladonna (aka Deadly Nightshade). Fame settles down to a powdery finish with soft hints of incense.

All notes were crafted to mingle harmoniously using a unique structure called the “push-pull technology,” instead of using the standard pyramidal structure with top, middle and basenotes. Because of the complimentary properties of each ingredient in the blend, the components interact together to highlight different olfactive aspects of each note at the same time, rather than having one overpower the others.

The aroma avoided the forgettable, familiar smelling trap that so many “celebrity scents” fall into. This could be thanks to the amount of care Gaga put into her latest expression of creativity. She did not just slap her name on some plain, mass produced bottles and call it a day. Mother Monster paid attention to every detail right down to the container, which was designed in collaboration with fashion industry legend Nick Knight. Fame is encased in a unique glass egg reminiscent of the now infamous vehicle she rode into the 2011 Grammy Awards. The Fame egg is topped with a heavy claw shaped bottle topper that looks like Gaga stole it directly from Batman and dipped it in pure gold.

Gaga’s signature scent, currently lining fragrance counters nationwide, is priced around $55 for a 1.7 ounce bottle and $79 for a 3.4 ounce bottle at most retailers including Macy’s and Sephora. Other options are available including a .34 ounce Eau de Parfum rollerball for $19 and a black egg shaped bath soap for $15. Click each individual product below for additional information.

The final verdict: Martinis and Mascara loves the sweet smell of Fame. Go take a whiff!
